Good location on Oregon coast for a week's stay?

Heading back up the Or. coast in 2nd half of Sept. and want to spend about a week in one CG. What would be a good area to stay in with maybe more things to see and do? Will be spending a day or two around Seaside and am thinking farther to the south. Pacific City? North Bend? Florence?

  • I can't think of anywhere we wouldn't be happy to stay for a week. Newport is great for a base camp, you can easily visit the rest of the coast north or south in a day. Don't miss the dunes at Florence, the buggy ride is a hoot.
  • We really liked Sea Perch RV Resort it's right ON the beach, if you can get a site over looking the beach it's even better.

As far as Oregon State Parks Honeyman South Florence & Beverly Beach just north of Newport are a couple of our personal and frequent favorites.
  • I gave you a couple of ideas for St. Pks. to stay at, now here is some things to do in different places. There are several private parks where you can stay, if you want ocean views, you pretty much have to use private.

    Things to do on the Coast(North of Winchester Bay);

All the state parks and picnic area/day use areas for beach combing

Winchester Bay for RV Park and County campgrounds, dunes

Florence for the jetties and the dunes, camping

Old Town Florence for Mo’s & BJ’s(ice cream), shopping and camping

Sea Lion Caves for the view of Heceta Head Light and caves, day use

    Cape Perpetua/Devils Churn

Yachats for shopping and views, beach combing, day use, kiting

Waldport for crabbing, rent a ring and crab for free, rental store will cook and clean your catch

Bay Shore for beach combing, kiting

Newport for the Aquarium, Old Town, shopping and the Brewery, kiting

Depot Bay for the Sea Hag's fish and chowder

Lincoln City for the Factory Stores and Glass studios south side of town, blow your own glass float.

Otis for the Café, best breakfast on coast that is cooked by someone else

Tillimook for the Cheese factory and ice cream
  • Beachside State Recreation Area is good, also. Just south of Newport and north of Yachats. I don't know how booked they are for that time period, though. We wanted a specific site, and it took weeks of trying before we were able to make our reservation. Every time a new booking window would open, we were on the computer with finger poised over the key. Finally got the space, but not until Sept 21.

The news this morning said that the red tide is particularly bad this year. Hopefully by the time we get there, it will be safe to go crabbing.
  • I also recommend Newport area. Nice beaches, not too far from Casino's, restaurants, whale watching, movie theaters, etc. We prefer to stay at Beverly Beach State Park - one of the nicest State Parks in the country. If your looking for nice private campground with pools etc Google Pacific Shores.
  • Anywhere on the coast is good. Salmon Harbor RV at Winchester bay is unmatched for views from your window.
  • We lived in Lincoln City on the central Oregon coast and go back often. In 2014 we spent 7 weeks in January and February on the coast and again in 2015 we spent 3 weeks on the coast.

The Whale watching tours in Depoe Bay are great, we spotted whales both years from shore.

Any one of the Mo's restaurants on the coast is great. For the view we like the one in the south end of Lincoln City on Siletz Bay - from the restaurant we always see bald eagles and sea lions on the sand bar across the water.

You will also see lots of sea lions on the water front in Newport.

Of course no trip to the coast would be complete without going agate hunting on the beaches.

For the view go to the Inn at Spanish Head in Lincoln City and go to the top floor. I was General Manager there in 1972.

Pier 101 in Lincoln City has razor clams to die for. I attended the opening of the restaurant 40 years ago.

A free attraction with a world class view is The Lookout Observatory & Gift Shop 3 miles South of Depoe Bay @ Cape Foulweather (spotted whales from here in 2015) – it is now run by the state of Oregon.
  • Newport is approximately the center of the coast. There is South Beach SP, Beverly Beach SP both of these are able to easily handle big rigs and there are a whole bunch of little ones between Florence and Newport. Lincoln City is further north and just on the north side of town the highway goes to Portland. A couple miles down that HWY is Otis Café, great breakfasts, German Potatoes are great.
  • Any of the Oregon state parks are great - have water and electric at site, and showers. Have nice big sites in most of the parks. Depends on rig size, some sites are tight, but ask first.
