Dan, we have a slightly different approach. It is better to show up late and ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission. We've camped with our 20 foot truck camper in this very campground. It is a poor stepchild as an N.P. camp. Very primitive, narrow, and steep; nothing regimented like normal big-time N.P.'s. The yardstick was; there was nothing of which to take a picture. We did not do any subterranean sight seeing here. The important info for you is that the park has much less use than the famous parks. It's just too far away from anywhere. For us, living on the West Slope Northern Sierra Nevada, it's one day away from us on the way to Moab, Colorado, Utah, etc. and thus is a convenient stopover. This is especially welcome on a hot summer day as the elevation is much higher than the desert floor. I think you can find a good star gazing position with low light pollution.
