Greetings from Assateague Island!

Got in last night, went to sleep with the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach.... What a beautiful place! Beautiful weather right now, no bugs, etc... Horses everywhere... Absolutely gorgeous! Should have come here, and skipped disney, and universal
  • Sorry, can't post a pic now, internet is slow on my phone. We are in oceanside loop A. Anyone that hasn't come here yet, needs to!

Told ya that one was worth the stop.

And you were right! We will be back
  • Two other things /critters to watch for.
They have a small Japanese Elk that was released there back in the 1930's.. Its called a Sika, and it looks kinda like a cross between a deer and a goat. They have a peculiar hop when they run.
Also the Delmarva Fox squirrel. Large squirrel with a tail that appears to be about triple the normal size. Go down to the chincoteague wildlife refuge/national seashore and you will see plenty of both.
    Enjoy.
  • OH there will be bugs. A good offshore breeze and you will be running for home :). But worth it.
  • Now consider going to Lewes, De and taking the ferry across to Jersey. It's a bit pricey but can be a very nice ride across the bay. Cape Henlopen State Park campground is only about a mile down the road from the ferry terminal on the Delaware side.

That will put you on the GSP, from there it's a straight shot up to the Tappan Zee Bridge. There are also plenty of campgrounds down the southern end of the Parkway.

  • Just a note from our visit to Assateague earlier this year. We were talking to the workers clearing sand out of the campsite in the oceanside loop, and according to them, this is the last year for that loop. They said the oceanside loop was being abandoned and new loops will be built across the street.
  • The ocean side lettered loops are in the MD State park campground.
The 2 oceanside loops in the federal park are indeed being moved across the road.
The 3 loops on the bay side of the federal park are lettered with numbered sites. One of those loops is no generators, you will have to listen to the generators in the other 2 loops :).
  • We just booked the electric loop for Columbus day 2018 at the state campground, looking forward to a return trip! Was told the state campground is going to put in another electric loop to be completed by the end of next year!

Did someone want to see a pik! :C
