Gulf Shores/Orange Beach AL

We are looking to head down to the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area in March for a couple of weeks.
Never been there but we have had several people tell us it's just about impossible to get into the state park there. If that is the case, any suggestions on a RV park would be appreciated.
Also, since this will be our first trip there, any suggestions on things to do/see, and very importantly, any must visit restaurants would be very much appreciated.

thanks in advance for any help,
Phillip
  • We've been to Gulf Shores numerous times and if we could not get into the SP I would also recommend Anchors Aweigh.

I've only seen one alligator in all the times I've stayed at the state park but I usually get a site all the way in the back of the campground for peace and quiet.
  • Thanks for all the replies. Giving us some great ideas. Keep em coming. This is the greatest RV forum.

    thanks,
    Phillip
  • Big Lagoon is a great state park but I don’t believe they have sewer hookups at the site necessitating a blue tote for a stay of a couple of weeks. Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores is excellent and I would give them a call just in case they have an opening for your time frame. There are a number of good RV parks in the area, the only one I wouldn’t recommend is the Southport Campground. The only good thing I can say about Southport is it’s on the Intercostal waterway. We thought it was a dump.

Lambert’s Café is a great place to eat and worth a visit. Lulu’s is worth a visit too but it is very popular so be ready for a wait to be seated. The Shrimp Basket is good for seafood and while it doesn’t look appealing on the outside, the food is very good. The Original Oyster House is very popular and will require a wait to be seated. I found the food at the Oyster House to be so-so. For Pizza try Papa Rocco’s and for a breakfast buffet try Hazel’s Nook.

Well Dennis, if you were fighting alligators all day, you might be a tad rude as well. :B
  • Big Lagoon State Park about 10 Minutes east in Florida is nice.

P.S. Try dinner at the Gulf restaurant in Orange Beach....Dennis
  • We just got back from our thanksgiving trip. This was our second stay at Anchors Aweigh. It is a very nice rv resort. Paved roads and sites full hook ups plus wifi and cable.
  • We have gone to the state park in March without reservations. Most of the time, at least some of the snowbirds have headed back toward the north. They always keep a few sites for walk-ins. We have stayed there and at Island Retreat. We prefer the SP, but Island Retreat was okay.
  • We have stayed at Lake Ospret, Anchors Aweigh, an Plantation Harbour. If u have a motor home u might check Bella Terra.
Check them out on rvparkreviews .. March should not be too big of a problem.

    Good luck an enjoy
