Gulf State Park

I just booked a site at Gulf State Park for June 7-11. This is our first time down to this area. We will be coming in Thursday a little before lunch should we have a good choice of sites or are they usually full this time of the week. Will they allow you to drive thru and pick a site or do you decide at the gate? I would love to hear of any recommendations of places to see and places to eat. I have a 15 & 13 year old kids so I hope there is something in the area for them.
Thanks

There is someone on duty at the campground office 24/7.

  • Any other recommendations for good sites or places to eat/see? We'll be down around the same time, June 9-16, with our friends and their 9yo.
    Thanks!

Maybe we'll see you there Lee.
  • Thanks dodgebob08, blog works now and I appreciate being able to see pictures and descriptions. We are going down there for the first time at the end of this month to practice snowbirding for a while. We made reservations this past summer.
  • Take a day trip to Ft Morgan. It's the most interesting fort I've very seen.
And you have to see Naval Musuem and the lighthouse in Penscola. Both well worh the visit.
  • I've really never seen a bad site in the Park unless you have to be right on the water and it's not the ocean. All the sites are paved, level and equally roomy as I recall.
  • They WILL allow you to check out your site before booking. During that time of the year, there should be plenty of open spaces. We really like the sites that are beside Middle Lake. I think it's Gator Road. If I could find a map, I could even give you a site # that has a HUGE yard, is right across from the bath house and is just marvelous.

Even though the campground is not ON the beach, you will usually get the breeze coming off the ocean.....therefore, DON'T leave your awning out when you leave. It may not be there when you return. The last time we were there, a quick little storm blew in and the awning on the brand new 5th wheel across from us landed on top of the RV. We were putting ours in when their's went flying or we would have at least attempted to put it down.

You should be able to find lots of things for the kids to do. On Rt 59 heading back toward Foley are several places with gocarts, rides, etc. There are places they would enjoy in Orange Beach, a couple miles down the road and the zoo, though small is fabulous.

Have fun - we will probably take a trip down there during spring break in April.
