  • Camped there a number of times. Some of the sites are smaller/tight but pics of each site and specific site info is available on RA. It is W&E only. Swimming and snorkeling in the springs is good but is not allowed when Manatees are present. Best Manatee viewing is during the colder winter months.
  • We have stayed there about a dozen times. The campsites are just so-so; some are small and a few are uneven, but they do have 50A electric and water and are within walking distance to the spring.

The spring is the real attraction. During a cold spell in the winter there can be over 200 manatees in the spring. There is a boardwalk running the length of the spring run from the spring head to the St. John River. During those cold spells when the manatees are in the parking often fills, with cars backed way out onto the public road, and the only way you can get into the park is if you are camped there.

There is also excellent paddling on the St. John, as well as DeLeon Spring SP, not too far away.

As far as the bath houses, I think they are about on par with most other state park facilities. Actually, we are usually there only 4-5 days at a time and primarily use our own on-board facilities.

    We will certainly go back.
  • We have not been in several years, but unless we hear the bath house has been replaced we will not go back. The BH has been "rode hard and put up wet"!
  • IIRC, there are train tracks behind some of the campsites. Not sure how often the trains are running now. If you're tent camping, I would suggest going up the road a short way to Hontoon Island. No cars on the island. You have to be ferried across on a pontoon boat if you don't have your own boat.
  • We like it.
We did notice that a few of the sites are on slopes
If you are a canoer or a kayaker, there is good paddling in the St John's River and the Hoontoon Dead River.
In the winter months there are lots of manatees in the spring run and also in the above mentioned rivers
If you do paddle, sent me your e-mail, and I'll send you a couple of the nice trips there with descriptions, and GPS waypoints.

  • camped there in oct. 2011. enjoyed it as we do most of the fl. state parks. swam in the sorings and did lots of hiking, which is what we enjoy doing. our bucket list is to do all the fl. state parks with camping. as a side note, even had a bear show up as I was firing up the grill, bur our 2 corgis scared it off. al c.
  • x2 for day visit, enjoyed watching the manatees. We enjoyed our time there 1-1/2 yrs ago, will return to camp in the future. By all appearances, it was clean and well maintained. Only saw portion of CG, some of the sites we saw were on the small side, also noticed these sites had space between with better than average privacy. Good luck and enjoy!
