What do airlines charge for a trip cancellation or change? On some fares if you cancel you lose the whole fare. Changes can be $100 - $150, and chances are greater that seat will not go empty, compared to a camping spot.
As said, the rules are stated up front. If one detests the rules, don't make a reservation in the first place.
Also, if the reservation was made on a credit card, merchants are typically charged a fee to process the refund, so they have to pay a fee and percentage on both ends of the transaction.
