I don't know about "hiding it" on purpose, but the much higher fees that AMEX charges does put it on the bottom of a merchants "preferred" list. I would not call it a "trick."

If there is only room to list 3 cards, certainly the more expensive one for the merchant is not going to be there.

Some businesses operate on a smaller net profit margin than AEMX fees. That is why some places don't accept them. I am not aware of the profit margin of Reserve America.

This is why many businesses no longer take AMEX-their fees are very high. I agree that the option is not being hidden but is the less preferred. Why would any business willingly take money out of their profit margin?

If you're saying yes to the customer who prefers Amex, you can have many more opportunities to earn back those fees and more. If you say no, you may have a one-and-done customer (or even one that walks away without completing the transaction).

The retail companies I've worked for (including the current one) and accept Amex are more concerned about me helping the customer buy more items than in having me try to manage back-end costs. All 3 firms I've had first-hand experience with do not have PIN-pads at the registers, even though they'd allow you to further reduce the processing costs when accepting debit cards.

I don't consider it anti-customer in the least. It's a wise business decision-why should those costs be passed to other customers when YOU have other options? Most people carry multiple credit cards and I don't think I know anyone who would just walk away instead of using their VISA or M/C. Those that do IMHO are somewhat selfish and may be problem customers in the long run.

In multiple businesses I have had over the years. I have never accepted AMEX because of their high merchants fees.

With literally thousands of transactions I never had a customer walk away because of it. They always offered an alternative payment method without a problem.
