I don't know about FL, but NC uses RA as well. But when we go to check in, they always have a list of campsites available. I believe you can't reserve a couple days of the date you want to use. So maybe you can just try to wing it since you live there and avoid all that.
I don't know how RA can be a monopoly. There is other reservation software out there. No one is forcing them to use it. The state of Florida decided it was the best for them. And I don't find "monopolies" bad. I call it enterprise. You can always go in the same business yourself. But if you are a day late and a dollar short, then you may have a hard go at it. You will have to offer the product/service differently and more appealing to your client.
I guess recreation.gov is a monopoly too.
