Wow. Tough crowd.
So I book eleven months out as that is the only way of possibly getting a site around Christmas/New Years. My 90 year old FIL has decided to pick now to climb into his death bed and yet somehow, I am a bad planner? Really?
No! You are being tough on yourself. It is look in the mirror time! I think most of us would find that it is quite a stretch to blame RA for you making a reservation almost a year in advance and your FIL passing away at the time of the reservation so you could not use it. How in the world can that be RA's issue? Yea, it cost you some money, big deal!
As to some other things you have stated in this thread, you might re-read what you wrote since it is a little confusing. For example in one place you think RA's cancellation policies are not fair and there should be no cost since that site most likely went to another due to it being a high demand campground. Yet, in another place you said the cancellation policy should be $10; basically in agreement that RA should have a cancellation policy and charge for it.
Your math is also a little confusing. Are you complaining about $17.75 or $7.75 since you stated that the RA cancellation policy should be $10. Isn't $7.75 or $17.75 insignificant compared to the cost of the FIL's memorial service and burial expenses? Penny wise; pound foolish perhaps?
Why be upset about things beyond your control. There are things within our control and things that we cannot control. Decide which is which and move on.
And Florida should treat you differently since you paid taxes? We all pay taxes! If every taxpayer is treated differently then at the end of the day we are all treated differently the same. And that is exactly what you don't like -- being treated the same as everybody else. I think a mirror is ready to answer your nagging question "mirror mirror on the wall, who is the most unreasonable of them all?"
As your FIL would want you to understand, life is short-- move on to bigger things. He was probably a great guy; will be missed; learn something from him.
