This is a handy website for impromptu camping at Florida State Parks
Camping this weekend FL
Unfortunately, you are coming down during peak time. Expect State parks to be full, but once in a while you can score a cancelled site. There are also County parks that offer campsites. Otherwise, you just have to start phoning private parks. "Free" camping is probably used by folks who have no other place to go. Avoid the area of the panhandle that got walloped by Hurricane Michael; and a few of the State Parks in the Keys are still rebuilding after Irma.
One of the prettiest parks we ever camped at was Kissimmee/Whippoorwill Lake KOA in Narcoosee - but it's NOT cheap.
