If you like history, be sure you check out the forts down there. Fort McAllister SP is a really great state park. They have a nice little museum and then there is a very large area where the bunkers are built right into the sand dunes. The dunes are covered with grass now, but it's very interesting.
Fort Pulaski is on the way to Tybee Island. I have not been there yet, but we're going next month. I love history myself, so I can never get enough of forts. - I_am_still_waynExplorerFort Pulaski is not to be missed!!!!!!!!
- 3_dog_nightsExplorerThanks for the replies, any other suggestions?
- doughereExplorerHistory, nature/birds, micro breweries and good food
History: Savannah center city, take a walking tour, Fort Pulaski of course.
nature/birds: Skidaway Island has some nice trails, and a nice nature center. Close by is a school/research center that has some great trails and a small nature building(its off McWhorter drive, can't think of name).
micro breweries: this is a drinking city.
good food: all over; some fun touristy spots along the waterfront.
We've stayed at Skidaway a number of times, and often stop for a few days returning from Florida in the spring. Never run out of things to do or see.

we enjoyed the wagon tour..found it very interesting...for eats...we love Mrs Wilkes....only open 11am to 2 pm Mon to fri..but the food is out of site
on the waterfront to eat was the Oyster House ,,was closed for re-modeling last time thru or the Olympia...was pretty good..Chuck - southernsnowExplorerHi, the park itself has nice trails. We also did a walking tour of the city and the tour book (I think we purchased it at the visitors center) was very interesting. The center also has an informative film that gives you good basis of history.
One of our favorite spots for lunch and a treat is Back in the Day Bakery. It is a very cool, retro styled bakery that has had some national exposure with a great cookbook. You can get a panini and one of their terrific baked goods. Never had anything bad. You can google for directions and hours.
Enjoy your trip and report back if you find a new treasure to share!
Marie - Dandy_DanExplorerFort Pulaski is a nice place. They have a guided tour and they explain a lot about the events and happenings there. Both times we have been to Savannah we have taken the all day trolley pass. They will take you around town and tell about different historical sites. You can get off and check out the area then grab the next trolley coming and continue the tour.
A little ways past Fort Pulaski on the other side of the road is a place called the Crab Shack. If you are into seafood it is a neat place to eat. You need to watch for the sign along the road as it is back a stone lane off the road.
Good Luck and have a safe trip. - wanderingdawgsExplorerExcellent suggestions from the previous posts. Here's a few more.
Plan a day to visit Ft. Pulaski and explore Tybee Island. Walk on the beach, climb the Tybee Lighthouse, walk out on the pier, visit the Marine Science Center, and eat at the Crab Shack or one of the other many restaurants on Tybee.
There are many other interesting things to do in Savannah as well. The Georgia Railroad museum and Ships of the Sea Museum are interesting. Take a walk along River Street and watch the container ships coming into the port. Go to Leopold's Ice Cream shop for the best ice cream you have ever tasted.
Have fun! - DrbolaskyExplorerSavannah & Skidaway Island SP - you just made me insanely envious.
Savannah is on our list of places to which we'll return. Don't miss the Riverwalk area. Take a tour to see the incredible architecture of the old houses.
Go over to Tybee Island and eat at the Crab Shack. Our seafood platter was easily the size of one of the tires on our Toyota and it was listed in the menu as being a meal for two. Well, the THREE of us couldn't finish it.......
Enjoy & safe travels. - 3_dog_nightsExplorerJust left the area because of impending weather. Found Savannah to be a beautiful old town that has been taken over by tourisum. The most enjoyable aspect for us was walking around the downtown area looking at the homes and buildings.
Skidaway Island State Park - easily in the top 5 most beutiful campgrounds we've ever been in! Loved it!
