Heading to Skidaway Island, Savannah next week

We like History, nature/birds, micro breweries and good food. Where should we make a point to go, not miss???
  • Ft. Pulaski was great and extremely enjoyable. Glad we went to Tybee, just to say we've been there. That's about all I can say about that, but in all fairness we were rushed for time. Skidaway was our campground for a night and left nothing special for us, but it was under construction/repair when we were there.
  • Two years ago, last time I was in Savannah, they had a free street fair along the river walk once a month. We didn't know anything about it until we stumbled upon it. Had an artist do a characature drawing of the wife and I. Street car travel is free I believe. Lunch at Paula Deen's
    Others here can verify?
  • If you are into WW2 history, The Mighty Eighth Army Air Force Museum in Pooler, just off I-95 just outside Savannah (you can see it from Interstate)- great place with restaurant inside-( my dad was in 8th during WW2.) Has inside and outside exhibits, etc.
  • When in Savannah, be sure to stop for a noontime meal at Mrs. Wilke's Boarding House. Everything is served family style at big round tables that hold 8 people. Strangers become friends over lunch. Southern Fried Chicken, all kinds of veggies and macaroni and cheese to die for. Just reach for a bowl, but keep one foot on the floor at all times. Wear loose clothes. :)
  • We visited Ft Pulaski several years ago and this fort was used in the filming of the movie "The Conspirator" about the Lincoln assassination and Mary Surratt. They were building the sets for the hanging scene while we were there. So watch the movie before you visit.
  • You're a little early, ST Patty's Day in Savannah not to be missed, stay at the Hardeeville CG in SC. Easy 10 minute drive over the bridge to down town.
