Oldmattb beat me to it, "Over the Edge" is a book about the Grand Canyon that my brother loaned me when we made our first long trip west. Tragic yet hilarious. People visiting NPs behave as if they are in a highly controlled Disney World environment, and believe the park rangers are there to protect them at all times.
At the North Rim, on the Bright Angel Point Trail, we saw lots of people scrambling around, laughing, not paying much attention to what they were doing...climbing up and way out on rocks to take pics of each other. There are no guard railings even on much of the narrow trail, much less hanging almost in space above the chasm. So your tax dollars and mine have to underwrite rescues for more than 250 of these doofuses every year.
