HIlton Head is a bit of an upscale adult oriented place. Golfing, tennis, lot of paved bike trails, decent beach. Nice Restaurants. Not really kid friendly. I don't consider it expensive but on the other hand it's not the most economical place to go. It's often referred to as the San Diego of the east.
HIlton head is divided into plantations(communities). Some of these are gated with private entrances that may or may not be open to the public. Some charge fees for entry. The plantations are like quasi little towns with their own set of rules, amenities and services. The harbor area is in the Sea Pines Plantation. It is a very popular area with a touristy harbour area , lot of bike paths , PGA golf course, beach etc. There is an entry fee /toll to this area. Which was $5.00 the last time I went in my dually 5 years ago.
Hilton Head is a unique place with decent weather year round.
If you are a frugal, flea market, all you can eat buffet kind of guy who would rather count their savings vs. spend a little more for the better item it may not be for you.
I enjoy flea markets and buffets, but I also enjoy the upscale nature of Hilton Head area as well.
