Hocking Hills SP to Fairy Stone SP

Planning a trip that a leg includes the stretch from Hocking Hills SP, OH to Fairy Stone SP, VA. Google has it as 5 plus hours, that's a full day for us. My questions is, with out going too far off course, what's there to see and do along the route? An eatery or two would also be nice to know.
Been to Pipestem and Babcock and want something new.

thanks
  • On Rt 58 coming in, slow down for lovers leap at Meadows of Dan, sharp curve and jaw dropping view. Try Floyd Va for some authentic Bluegrass mountain music, Fairy Stone is out by itself not much there but the wonderful quiet:) Nice trails, some cabins in the park are old CCC construction units.
An hour or so south has Mt Airy NC, the town is well known for the Andy Griffith stuff throughout it. Tell us which way you're going after that and I may be able to offer a suggestion or two.
  • Andy was a sherriff in another time. At least Barnie was armed.
  • There was a nice campground up at Meadows of Dan as you take 58 across the mountain. As you start down the mountain on 58, it is a really good chance to check your taillights in your mirrors as you traverse some of the curves. All the rest of 58 if pretty good.
  • Going down 58, we usually detach the toad and send DW in front, talking to each other via speaker on cell phone. That way, she warns me of traffic approaching into the switchbacks. Easy places at the bottom to stor and reattach the toad.
  • Is the Big Walker Lookout Store in Wytheville worth the stop? A slight detour off the original path, but might be of interest.
And yes, to answer "aimlessly", Mt Airy is on the agenda before heading west and homeward bound.
Also looking for stops/sites between there and St. Louis, MO. This is our winter thing, besides Dr. appts, making/planning spring trips.

Thanks for all the help and info.
