How many of these had fuel left in them for an extended period of time? How old were they? Without that information, it's not really useful to know this. One has to take care of an engine, and of course engines that were built before engines were being designed for use with Ethanol-containing fuel aren't going to fair well.
they were not gummed up, they were "eaten up". gummed up can generally be torn down, cleaned up and reused. as ethanol containing fuel will absorb a lot more water than straight gasoline that seems to be one of the issue along with attacking stuff in older engines as you point out.
