Thank you all for the excellent responses so far!
Naio touched on what is probably my biggest concern: The -time- lost looking for something last-minute if multiple locations are a no-go. With the kids still in school (when the %@!$ did my daughter reach 8th grade lol), the summer is the only time for the bigger trips.
I am intrigued, however, by the prospect of just picking a spot along a forest road or something of that nature that a few have mentioned. How prevelant are locations like that? That is definitely not something that can happen where we are. I would not have a problem just boondocking it somewhere if the need arose.
Back in April we were driving through Goblin state park in Utah (car, not rv) and I noticed alot of campers scattered about in places in the distance at the base of the hills. Wondering if those were dedicated sites or just drive-in-and-pick-a-spot. We drove pretty far back on one of the roads, and I have to say that the drivers of some of those long travel trailers/toyhaulers had more intestinal fortitude than I would have given the condition of the roads....:E I don't know how they made it without the rig shaking apart and/or the contents of every cabinet spilled.
Like I mentioned, we are very used to calling for last-minute hotels for years now and have always been able to get something, even in summer. But the RV adds another dimension, however, with the need to eventually get water/dump tanks/use of batteries/restrictions on generator, etc. etc..
Appreciate the info so far.
