Since the average time spent at the South Rim for tourists is 3 hours a month seems like a long time UNLESS you are going to be hiking, horseback riding, etc but still that seems long.
I'd search this Forum for Yellowstone for more info but I think 3 or 4 days is enough to get a flavor of the park.
