Huntington Beach State park

We are at Huntington Beach SP we were told the old campground was destroyed durring a huricane. We were told it was just south of Atalaya. We walked up the road but there seems to be no trace of it.What year did it close and is there some whete to view pictures of it?
  • When we first visited in June of 1980 there were 2 campgrounds. One south and one north of Atalaya. Hugo's overwash destroyed the infrastructure of the south CG and the decision was made to close it. It is still recognizable but you have to bike or walk around the barricade at the concrete walkway out to 17 to get to it. Basically a straight run of sites with a turn around at the end. The north campground was improved several years later when they added the row of sites backing up to the entrance road and an additional bath house serving both old and new sections. A truly great place to be, enjoy your stay.
  • The old campground was still there in the early 2000's, stayed there once. Was disappointed when they closed it. Still enjoy going.
  • The original campground was always to the left. Their used to be a trailer in front of the now dump stations, it along with a lot of the old campground was wiped out by Hugo. We have been camping their since 89. The campground you are referring to was leased by the family that owns that area. When the lease came up for renewal they did not renew it.
  • Looking at the site in Google Earth - the road clearly looks like a campground loop. I'm gonna make a wild guess and say the storm was Hugo in 1989. It 'rearranged' much of the South Carolina coastal infrastructure as it came ashore.
