Idaho... Boise, Challis, Sawtooth NFS campgrounds?

We're traveling thru Idaho with a 36 foot 5th wheel... Going thru Boise NFS, Chalet NFS, Sawtooth NFS and other NFS areas in eastern Idaho on our way to Montana.

Can anyone recommend NFS campgrounds with sites large enough to accomadte our 5W? Electricity would me nice but not required... also we don't want to make reservations... just want to wing it.

Thanks

    Understood

We're flexible... have plenty of time and don't have a specific route... our route is dependent on CGs along the way that we can fit in. We will eventually end up in Ennis MT. but may go through the Grand Tetons and YS if possible. Do you have a suggested route you would recommend?

Thanks to all for your replies.
  • There are several options depending on what route you are taking to Montana. If you go via Salmon and US 93, there are BLM and FS campgrounds along US 93 that will fit your 5th. Just north of Salmon is a BLM campground right on the Salmon River - Tower Rock IIRC. Further north on US 93 are several FS campgrounds, but they may only have one or two spots that fit your trailer well.

If you are going over to Eastern Idaho and up I-15 to Montana, there are a few good spots. One is the North Bingham County Park http://www.co.bingham.id.us/parks_recreation/north_bingham_park.html that is right on the Snake River - take I-15 Exit 108 East for 1 mile. Other options closer to the border include Stoddard Creek FS campground just north of Spencer - lots of boondocking in the area also.

Finally, if you are going up to Yellowstone via US 20, there are several FS campgrounds in the Island Park area, but they are typically busy, even during the week. Some take reservations and some do not.

    Hope this helps...

  • In/near Sawtooth National Recreation Area, check out the Redfish Lake Campgrounds. I think there are 5 or 6 and some of them are non-reservable. We stayed in Outlet Campground which has some great sites. Also try Stanley Lake. I think there were a couple of sites large enough. If you want to boondock, there are plenty of places along that road, on your right as you travel north on 75 up to Stanley.

Check out the Stanley Baking Company if you pass through the area. They have a really great breakfast.
