Ideas for New York state?

Just exploring some options for upstate New York. We traveled through briefly on our way to and from Maine (from Michigan). We stayed one night Saranac Lake on the way out and then a few days in Niagara on the way home. We'll probably spend a week and are initially thinking about the Adirondacks and Finger Lake areas, but are open to any other suggestions. I've read up a little on Lechworth State Park, which also looks interesting. We like outdoor activities (swimming, kayaking, etc.), wineries, and just good old relaxing. We have a Class-C motor home which houses myself, wife, 10 yr old daughter, and typically two cats and will tow a car along behind us if necessary.

    We visited upstate New York last fall on our way to Maine. Our first stop was Letchworth Falls State Park. We really enjoyed the many hiking trails and water falls as well as the Inn located within the park. A great place for breakfast after hiking! From there we traveled to the Finger Lake Region for a stay at Watkins Glens State Park for a couple of days. Great hiking in the gorge and beautiful drive around the wine trail. From there we traveled to the Lake George area. Great bike trails and beautiful scenery and great food. We found a restaurant that we hope to return to some day...Bistro LeRoux. Scallops were out of this world!. Would recommend any of these areas! Enjoy!

    As 2hams said - WG, Sampson, most any CG in the Finger Lakes area for things to do & places to go. Letchworth for outdoor activities & "real" camping. Definitely bring the car.

    x3 on Watkins Glen and Finger Lake wineries. Maybe Sampson State Park then Letchworth SP

    Check out the Saratoga/Lake George area. If you like top thorobred horse racing, Saratoga is the place to be in August. Lots of camping in L. Geo. & it's ane asy commute to Saratoga.

    So would it be best sticking to the Finger Lakes area / west end of the state if we only have a week? Possibly splitting up our time between two campgrounds?

    I forgot the Hudson valley, again wineries, lots of history and Albany the state capital has a great state museum.

    if you add Watkins to your list, which puts you near the Seneca lake wine trail, you can also add the corning museum of glass. Cooperstown, baseball hall of fame, and Glimmerglass lake. Rochester has a childrens toy museum that is great! good for 10 year olds as well as younger kids. 1000 Islands and St.Lawerence river. Oh, Ithaca with Cayuga lake, water falls, wineries... So much to see, so little time.
