We've stayed at Rock Crusher for portions of the past 3 winters and this year we've reserved for 3 months. We also have some friends that stay in condos in Gulf Shores. I'd take the weather in Crystal River over Gulf Shores anytime. Too cool in GS for me.
Rock Crusher has a nice atmosphere. Plenty of trees/scrubs between and around the individual sites. This gives you good privacy without making you isolated. There's a friendly bunch of campers there, especially if you take part in activities. I like to play horseshoes and golf and there are groups for both. You will have to ask someone about the golf because it's not on the activities calendar, but rather run by campers themselves. There are groups that like to bicycle, kayak, and ride their motorcycles. There are crafts for those that like them and if you just want to be private you can do it without people trying to drag you into something you're not into. Good places to eat around the area too.
