Island Lake campground Co

Has anyone been to Island Lake campground in Colorado close to Grand Mesa Wondering about the roads towards the campground.Pulling a 27 foot TT.Any information will be great.I went on Google earth and its kind of hard to tell about the conditions of the road.My main concern is Is it safe to be towing a trailer.? Thanks
  • We've gotten up to Grand Mesa using both directions with no issues. With your 27' RV you'll have no problems. Grand Junction can get very hot in summer and the Mesa is a welcome relief. Have fun!
  • If you are coming east on I-70, the route through Mesa and Powderhorn is much shorter but, as the others have mentioned, steeper and more winding. Jumbo CG, a neighbor of Island Lake, also has electrical hookups and water, but I don't remember if it has flush toilets, if that is important to you. And, while only one man's opinion, Jumbo is listed in the book of the same name as one of "Colorado's 100 Best Campgrounds" and Island Lake, while mentioned in the book, isn't in his top 100.

Of course, if it were me heading from California to Grand Mesa, I would approach the campground from the south for another reason. Getting off I-70 at Grand Junction and heading south on US 50 gives you the perfect excuse for detouring to the "town" (I use that term loosely) of Gateway. Then you can spend some time at the Gateway Museum, one of the most interesting auto museums in the nation. It was built near his ranch by the founder of the Discovery Channel and contains some pretty special cars. But that's just advice from a lifelong "car nut," so you can take it or leave it!

Hwy 65 is fine for towing your TT. I would go up from Delta/Orchard City as it is less curvy than if you went up thru Mesa and Powderhorn.

I think the road out of Cedaredge is probably an easier pull also. Even from Mesa to Powderhorn we find the road to be pretty steep, even though it doesn't seem like you're even close to the mesa edge yet. But, I will say that when we go, we always go through Mesa as it is more convenient for us from home.

Besides mosquito repellent, don't forget to pack a jacket or sweatshirt. It rarely gets above the mid-70's during the day in the middle of the summer and gets pretty cool in the evening.

    Take mosquito spray....in gallon sizes!
