Itasca Minnesota

I am interested in visiting and camping in this area of Minnesota to explore the head waters of the Mississippi next summer. Has anyone camped in this area before? If so were did you stay and what is there to do? Thanks!

  • WE stayed at the Bemidji KOA. Clean campground with full hookups. Not far from Lake Itasca. Campgrounds in park are not full hookups but are nice.
  • Just came back...
There is also a full hookup private campground just outside the north entrance - not ritzy, but not a bad spot, either. We tented there about 4 years ago. That's when we decided to move up to an RV - not because of the campground, but because of the tent!

There are many others a little ways away - we stayed at Stoney Point Resort in Cass lake (about a 45 min drive from Itasca) this past two weeks.

Many long, paved bike trails in the area - Paul Bunyan, Heartland, etc., so bring the bikes, also!

Also check out Bemidji State Park, just north of the town of the same name, about 1/2 hr from Itasca.
  • I stayed at Bear Paw campground along lake Itasca 2 weeks ago. Most of the sites are larger RV friendly but not all. Check when making the reservation. The bike/walking trail goes all the way to the headwaters and is excellent. I rode down on a Saturday morning at 8:00 and was the only one there. The fog was rising from the water as the sun came over the trees. We went back in the afternoon and there were so many people that there wasn't much point in taking any pics. The sun sets on the lake were beautiful.

The visitors center at the headwaters is very interesting.

I came across from the Straights and had also stayed at Bond Falls Flowage. It has limited big rig sites. I dont know much more about that area but I had seen the dirty end of the Miss so I wanted to see the crystal clear end. From there I went to the Badlands and Black hills
  • Itasca State Park is the crown jewel in the extensive MN state park system.
Two camppgrounds in the park, Lots of things to do. Douglas Lodge is a great place to have a nice dinner. Take the wilderness drive. Ride bikes on paved trail that goes to all key places in the park. Great largemouth bass fishing on Lake Ozawindib. Great new visitor center and gift shop. Walk across the mighty Mississippi (in just a few steps of ankle deep water).
  • Itsaca State park like mentioned. Two great camp grounds with plenty to do. The wilderness trail is a one way 12 miles road with great sites and trails to explore. Great welcome center and oh yeah the head waters of the mighty Mississippi. We where there on Labor Day. Enjoy our great State Park. Reserve early.??
  • Itasca State Park is where the Lake Itasca and the headwaters of the Mississippi River are and it has a couple of good campgrounds.
