JACKSONVILLE nAVAL sTATION

?gOT TO GET IN TWO WEEKS OF Rving for IRS and us a peaceful escape from drudgery of maintaining this place.
Thinking of Jacsonville Naval station.
Anyone had a good experience they would like to tee of the bad?
What's to do?
Do we have to still get the navy vehicle stickers on coach and car?
How are the sites, water, and power, sewer?
Fishing...boats...tackle shop... temperature and water late December.
We stayed at Kinds Bay in 10 and it was a great place but not much happening. Drove a hundred miles each day looking for accomodations for kids. Hope to get fifty pound of snapper and bass, and grouper, an mahi.
Where to go?
Thanks a bunch and Happy Thanksgiving. It ain't over til Monday.

kings bay is okay, not much to do but nice here in georgia
  • We stayed at JAX NAS about 10 days in March 2013. It was a nice campground, no complaints. Easy access from 295.
    To answer your questions:
    1) What to do? - For a city the size of Jacksonville we didn't find a lot of tourist things. We asked various places and every time was told "There's not a lot to do in Jacksonville." and then they'd tell us about something along the coast to see and do. There is a greyhound racing track about 2 miles south of the main gate. It's not that far from the coast and plenty of things to see and do along the coast. Short drive to St Augustine and a bit farther on down to Daytona Beach. On base the golf course and club house is next to the campground and an easy walk. They have boat rentals. We didn't spend a lot of time on base using the facilities.
    2) Base stickers? - Retirees do not need vehicle stickers. They do a 100% ID check and an ID card is all you need. Our vehicle sticker had just expired and I had planned on getting a replacement. Never had any problem getting on base at any hour with just our ID.
    3) Sites, water, etc? - Some are pull thru and some back ins. We had a back in and no problem getting our 40 ft 5er in the spot with plenty of room for the truck. We had full hookup. They were going to do some upgrade/improvements on the lower sites in the wooded area. Don't know if that has been done. Those sites were closer to the water.
    4) Boats, tackle, water temp? - We were told they rent boats. Don't know, didn't pursue it. Don't have any idea about water temp.

Make reservations. When we were there it was full almost every night. Reservations and registration is done at the Auto Hobby Shop. The people working there were very helpful and friendly. We called about 2 hours before arriving to confirm our reservation and they gave us our camp spot, told us to park it first and then come back. Good bunch working there.
We'll most likely go back this March.

  • You were lucky that you did not have to get vehicle decals. USN and USMC still require them. I would plan on having to obtain decals if you do not have them.
  • I went aboard Mayport about 6 months ago and although I had a retired ID, I still had to get a visitors pass to enter. NAS may a little more lax but I wouldnt count on it.
  • My sticker had expired when we were at JAX NAS this past March. I asked security when entering about my expired sticker and they said retirees didn't need a sticker and all I needed was my ID. I went to Pass and ID (next to the main gate) to get a sticker because some bases still require it. Pass & ID said retirees do not need a sticker, only active duty and permanent party get base stickers. They no longer issue stickers to retirees.
  • The DOD sticker is evolving or being fazed out, depending on service and location. Lic, reg, and current Ins always works as a back up. The Famcamp is nice, stayed there a few years back. The only complaint I had was the most unprofessional civilian guard I ever met at the gate. When I entered and produced my ID he just grunted and waved me in, no good afternoon or anything. lol
  • Sorry for posting in two forums. My intention was to post in RV Parks etc. When it didn't appear I reposted there.
