Johnsons's Shut-ins State Park (MO)

Wondering if the subject park has boating/fishing access located within the park?

Thank you.

  • We drove through the new Johnson's Shut-Ins SP and there is no lake. The closest place to fish would be on the black river. It is a shallow river. We have floated from Twin Rivers Landing campground in Lesterville. We had to drag the canoes in places. I don't recall any boats.
  • The nearest boating would be about 25+/- miles South on Clearwater Lake or a little further to Lake Wappapello.

The place I sent you shows fishing as an activity clicking the ICON gets you to a page that states; "Fishing at Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park
Cast your line into the Black River.

Boating is not a listed activity for the park you are inquiring about.
ON this page https://mostateparks.com/activity/boating it tells you which eight lakes in Missouri have boating
  • Been there a few times to play in the "shut ins" water. The river is more like a small, shallow stream in this area. No boating. Wade fishing is popular above and below the shut in area.

Get on Google Earth and go to 37 degrees, 32'21.96 N, 90 degree, 50'18.23 W. This will show the "fun" area.

And there is no mention of boating. The Lake named Number 49 Lake is not within the park according to the maps, and does not have any boat ramps. Lower Taum Sauk Lake is a hydro power lake that (appears) to pump water to a mountain top reservoir during the night, and generates power during the day by draining it into the Lower lake. Again it (appears from comments I found) to be restricted or inaccessible to the public.

Thanks information, Charles. I saw that it referenced the Black River, and shows a gal fishing but not much else. I'm guessing that the river is outside of the park's boundries.

I might have to take a trip up there and check it out.
