Justifying Fort Wilderness

Looking for opinions and reasons from veteran Fort Wilderness campers.

It's on our bucket list someday to pull the 5th wheel 1200 miles each way down to Fort Wilderness for a week to 10 days. What better way to share your love of camping and Disney than to stay there right? My wife and I have camped there several times when we were newlyweds in a tent years ago and have great memories there. We go there nearly every year now but we usually stay in the on site resorts. But depending on the time of the year and campsite it can actually cost more to camp at Fort Wilderness than to stay at a value resort.

So with that being said, I'm finding it hard to justify taking the extra days to pull a 5th wheel down there just to camp there and not to mention the extra fuel costs. Now I realize some people it's a matter of liking to sleep in their own bed versus sleeping in a mystery bed. Sleeping in hotel beds does not bother me as long as they are clean. Or for others with a large family it can pay as you can have 10 people on a site. From a dollars and cents point of view it does not make sense for us to stay there obviously other than making Disney part of a larger trip, in other words take our time going down and back and visiting other points of interest along the way.

We absolutely do love the Fort and we make a trip there every year to visit even if it's just to grab dinner at the Trails End or to see the Hoop de soo review

So how do you justify the cost of staying there? Is it also a part of a larger trip? Snowbirds? I realize you can stay off site for much less but to us that is not an option.

  • If not a financial burden and you want to do it, don’t try to justify it. Just do it and enjoy. If there are concerns that would take away the enjoyment, then don’t.
  • We just go..... We enjoy it there and the Fort is awesome to stay at...

It's our vacation, and we enjoy the trailer much more than staying at a resort hotel. But that is what WE like...

Your vacation, Your money, Your call... whatever you decide will be good.
  • That really is a hard call. With the cost of FW I think I would lean towards just stay in one of the Disney hotels.
  • It's your vacation and your money, Spend it how you want. I certainly could not justify the expense of Disney, but then I'm a cheapskate.
