Taking 95 thru DC at any time of day is like gambling. You will rarely win. If the 495/95 stretch doesn't get you with daytime backups and night time lane closures VDOT's brilliant plan to merge what seems like 25 lanes down to 3 at Stafford VA will.
We stop at Stagecoach RV park in St. Augustine on our way south. Very nice place and lots to see around St. Augustine. If you are a golfer we highly recommend the Golf Hall of Fame.

From December thru Feb. the "good" ones are booked pretty solid. Might find an overnight space or a few days but if you want to stay a week or more without jumping around you almost HAVE to book well in advance.
I made the trip from Staten Island NY to Key west 2 years ago. The most direct route is 95 just get through DC not during rush hours. As far as camprgrounds Boyds is good and you can take the bus downtown right outside the campground. If you want laid back, look at Geiger Key.
