Key West

My husband and I are looking at visiting Key West next year in January or February. Is this a good time to visit? Also we probably won't be camping doing a hotel. What are some must do activities in that area? Thanks

  • Fly in to KW airport. Rent bikes/walk. Parking is at a premium. Angelina Guest House 302 Angela St. and Key West Harbor Inn both have excellent reviews on Tripadvisor.
    Things to do or see:
Schooner Jolly Roger (red mast) at the Harbor - Day sail $35 for 2 hrs (we did this, we enjoyed it), Ft. Zachary Taylor Beach, Simonton Beach, a very small beach at the end of Simonton Street (quiet sunset view area), Bo’s Fish Wagon, a site not to miss 801 Caroline & Williams Cash only,US 1 mm0 sign is at the end of Truman, Southern most Buoy is at Whitehead Street & South St., Large concrete Pier at the end of White Street, West Martello Tower & Garden, near pier, free 7 days week 9:30 a.m.- 5 nice garden in an old fort maintained by the KW garden club, Smallest Bar at 124 Duval Two bar stools. It is between two buildings,The Bull (bar) 1st floor, The Whistle (2nd floor w/balcony) and The garden of Eden (roof top clothing optional),Smokin’ Tuna bar, 4 Charles St. & Telegraph St., Turtle Kraal Bar, & Tower Bar, turtle races 6 p.m. Mon-Fri,Jimmy Buffets recording studio is next to Conch Republic. No sign. Harbor walk is right next to the building. White block building at the waters edge, Check the 6toejam.com website to see who is playing and where, Key West web camera above the door at Sloppy Joe’s bar, check it out online. http://www.liveduvalstreet.com/

  • Conch Train Tour as an orientation to the island, Fort Zachary Taylor State Park (nicest beach on the island, but remember, the Keys are NOT known for beaches), Key West snorkeling cruise, Key West Cemetery, climb the lighthouse, sunset at Mallory Square, Schooner Wharf Bar, stroll the wharf - find a place that suits your fancy and have a happy hour drink & appetizer. There's usually some type of event going on that can be lots of fun - check the freebie local newspapers. January & February can be chilly or glorious - be sure to be ready for either. ENJOY!

Heck no it's the worst time to visit the best would be in the summer. The big must do is watch the sunset from the pier. A crowd of hundreds gather to watch the sun set into the Ocean and their are entertainers and vendors there too. The only other attraction (that I know of) is Hemingway's old house and his 6 toed cats. Otherwise the main entertainment seem to be getting inebriated.

There is a pillar which proclaims itself as the southernmost point in the US that people like to get a photo of them and the pillar.
  • Lots of bars with live bands. Everything from jazz to rock bands. Gas monkey bar is fun for car guys
    Consider renting bikes while there
  • Key West is a tourist trap.
If you like drinking go for it.

The prime and best things in the Keys are fishing, boating and diving/snorkeling.

The only good beach on the Keys is at Bahia Honda State Park.

The east and west costs of Florida have miles and miles of wide sandy beaches, but you won't find that in the Keys

With that said; yes Jan and Feb are the two best months to visit Key West or the rest of the Keys
We winter in Key Largo and love it since we are hard core kayak paddlers and there are so many good options for that.

  • Add fishing...lol. Not sure if the drinking is before or after. They don't call it "Duval Crawl" for nothing.
  • Jan/Feb is high season, rooms will be hard to get, and EXPENSIVE.
Key West is mainly good for shopping, and drinking.
There is a small seaquarium, glass bottom boat rides, the wrecking museum, day trips to Ft Jefferson in the tortugas.
