Lake Champlain Ferry

We're touring the Adirondacks this Thursday before overnighting in Waterbury, VT.

Any advice on taking the Essex, NY - Charlotte VT ferry? We were thinking about going up and driving through Lake Placid before continuing onto Vermont.

Hoping to catch some foilage.

  • Thank you! Excited to cross the Lake tomorrow. Glad to know from your experience that it'll be fine. Thanks for the tip on the Essex side. Just a 29' Class C.
  • Cloudy overcast day, past peak colors, but still beautiful...

  • Southern Crossing schedule and rates

I've taken this ferry hundreds of times during my lifetime. It's never been busy or crowded, it is a quick 30 min trip. The ferry does have an enclosed viewing cabin above the deck, very Spartan, but it is a warm place to get a good view.

Are you taking your camper with you or just a vehicle? Length wise, most rigs will fit. Boarding on the Essex side is trickier/tighter than the Charlotte side, which is quite open with easily navigated turns.

Views are pretty spectacular. I'll see if I can find some pictures to post...
  • We went across the ferry at Plattsburgh NY which takes you over to Hero VT. We then stayed the night at Apple Island RV Resort. Short ferry ride and we took our class A and toad on the ferry with no problem.
