Lake Superior circle tour in Sept

We're planning the "great circle tour" around Lake Superior in early Sept. What kind of weather can we expect? Will most provincial and private rv parks still be open? I expect we'll see some fall color?
Thanks to all who share their knowledge.

  • September will be a lovely time to visit. Color should be out and the bugs will be gone. I would bring clothes for any type of weather. We were in the UP for for the 4th of July two years ago and it was 25 at night! Crazy, but you never know. Bring gloves and jackets just in case.
  • Be sure to read the previous posts by searching this Forum for `Lake Superior' and the article in the July 2016 Trailer Life 75th Anniversary Issue entitled Shipwreck Shoreline which was informative and well written.
  • For upper Minnesota I'd highly recommend staying in one of our State Parks. Tettegouche and Temperance River are the 2 that have electricity (the others have no power). You will definitely need reservations. For private parks I'd recommend the Grand Marais city park (it's right on Lake Superior and you can walk the boardwalk to town for a great meal and don't miss the "Best donut shop". They really are good! Another private park is the Two Harbors city park again right on the water.

September is a great time to visit the north shore of Minnesota. Color usually starts later September and yes, everything will be open.

As for weather you can expect anything from 50's to 70's during the day and 40's to 50's during the night. We had one day last week where the high was only 62 and later this week it will be 94. You just never know.
  • Based on this link and personal experience, the color change is normally mid to late sept/ early October in th UP. It can be shorts and tee shirt warm or winter coat warm. Normal temps are somewhere in between. Good chance there won't be snow. In September most campgrounds in MI should be open. Can't speak for Canada.
