On a trip to California on I-80 is it worthwhile to take a detour to see the Lake Tahoe area or better to keep going?

If you like to hike or mountain bike, plan to spend a few days in the Tahoe area. Wonderful recreational opportunities.
Bring an extra big wallet, though. Everything is expensive. Not outrageous, but not cheap.
