We stayed at Circus Circus two weeks ago. We've been there a few times before and knew what to expect. The place really is a dump. They said that it was recently refurbished, but it's still a dump. It reminds me of a drive-in movie: it's just a big paved lot with pedestals poking up like the speakers at the old drive-ins.
As long as you know what to expect and don't get your hopes up that it's an actual destination, then you should be OK.
The check-in process is a drag too. The girls working at the check-in desk had to call the regular Customer Service desk and wait on hold forever to verify your reservation and payment. It took almost a half hour to check in.
Oh and be prepared for the "resort fee" (city tax) wherever you stay. I think our space was about $30, but the resort fee was another $28 on top of that.
