Leesburg Florida area

Our son is fishing a big tournament in the Harris Lake chain area in March and we are considering going down. I found Lake Griffin SP but cannot the State of Florida website gives few details of the campgrounds or details. Anyone stayed there?
Ideas or suggestions of places with FHU relatively close to Leesburg?
I think the launch will be at a marina there/
  • Lake Griffin SP is great - we stay there often as a final stop on our way home. We live just south of Leesburg. Send me PM with email and we can chat about the area. How big is your rig???

40 ft Newmar Canyon Star. Handicap version. My wife is in a wheelchair and/or a mobility scooter. We try to find a site with enough to let the wheelchair ramp down on the passenger side and allow her to get on and off the ramp.

  • Geez the Florida State Park site has taken a big turn for the worst. You used to be able to display state maps by sections showing the parks in that area, NE Florida for example. Or by name. And the individual park site had useful info. Not any more they threw the info out and filled the sites with photos. I couldn't even search for lake Griffin on the state site, it wasn't obvious anyway.

These people just cannot leave well enough alone, it may not have been up to the latest web standards but it was functional. The same thing happened to Campground Reviews.
  • I'm assume that the fishing tournament is at Venetian Gardens along SR44 in Leesburg. Probably the closest "nice" FHU park would be Holiday travel resort on rt33 off of US27 on the south side of town. Never camped there but have friends who have a park model in the park and love it-they've been going there for several years. About 4 miles from Venetian Gardens. There are a couple smaller CGs closer, but I don't know if I would want to stay in them. JM wrote about Southern Palms-which is a very nice park. but you're probably about 10 miles from Venetian Gardens. Probably at the end of March you're not going to have any problems finding a place. I could, or monkey44 could probably also give you the names of some other places(we lived there for several years) if you like, but probably your best bet would be the Holiday travel resort(maybe the name might be Holiday rv village. • I'll check those out and take a couple photos this weekend ... and look at area and how nice the parks are - will also take boat launch area photos.

Yes, tournament is Venetian Gardens ... Rte 44, south side of Leesburg.
  • It does not look like your motorhome will fit in any of the accessible sites in Lake Griffin State Park. This area is tough to find good sites. There is a park Fisherman's Cove at Lake Harris which is on the southern side of the lake. We were not impressed when we drove through it but it would do in a pinch for us.
A really nice park, Grand Oaks RV and Resort, usually has availability unless they are hosting an event (horse shows and dog trials) is about 20 min (12 miles or so) north off of Hwy 441 in Lady Lake. We found it when we were looking for a place to attend a nearby dog agility trail. 50 AMP, FHU,paved roads and sites, small but excellent restaurant onsite, great hosts with selection of pull thru and back in sites although only a few sites have shade. Beautiful property with great views of the pastures from the campground. Price point runs about $50 a night.
If I recall Southern Palms is okay it has been awhile. However, if I remember correctly the sites are grass unless there are some accessible sites that we missed. Not familiar with Holiday RV park.

Just click on "Find A Park" and then "View Statewide Map". Or bookmark this direct link: Florida State Parks

The "Search" function on the main page easily brought up Lake Griffin SP and other related links. What info is missing from the park pages?
