A few years ago, my wife and I paddled over and back in our kayaks.
We had to wait until a large freighter passed before crossing the shipping lane.
At that time when we explored the island, there was a small blackened area that was caused by a "controlled burn".
I guess they should have waited for a lightning strike.
On the way back we had to surf in with breakers.
On two other occasions we paddled the five miles across Tampa Bay to Anna Maria Island, but those recaps are for another time
