I would suggest Wildwood State Park in Wading River. It is a state park with full hookups on the north shore of LI. It is right on the LI sound, although you must walk to the beach, and no pets allowed. You can also check out Nickerson Beach in Lido Beach, which is parking lot style camping, but right on the beach. Smith Point in Shirley is right on the beach as well with few full hookups. Reservations are a must, and near impossible during the summer as residents get first dibs, and the park is very popular for Suffolk residents. Long Island is very nice, but be very careful with the roads. There are many low clearance bridges. Stay off any parkway except William Floyd Parkway if going to Smith Point or Wildwood. Additionally, if you are traveling to LI take the George Washington Bridge, Cross Bronx Expressway (the worst road in the US), to the Throgs Neck Bridge, Clearview Expressway, to Long Island Expressway East, and you will have no problems. Just a head's up, right after you get on the LIE off the Clearview, there is a bridege that is marked at 12'10". Disregard it as trucks, buses, and RVs go under it with plenty of room to spare. I am at 13'2" and have no problems. Same issue is on the Clearview Expwy at Northern Blvd. Nothing to worry about. Don't bother routing around them. You will see trucks and buses take those routes all the time.
