Long Key SP, Florida

We were there yesterday.

For you folks that love Long Key SP; they are closing it in October of next year for one year.
They are going to build a shore line retaining wall to stop the erosion

Thanks... saved that in my Florida 2017 folder

    You are welcome.

We paddled our canoe a few days ago in the southern section of the Everglades National Park, doing the "Hells Bay Canoe Trail".
After four miles of the canoe wide, twisty, mangrove lined salt water trail when we entered the wilderness of Pearl Bay, we were greeted by a Dolphin.
Then on the way back it popped up again, right in front of us. Evidently to say good by.

Thanks for info. Yes we do kayak and canoe. We live on a pond and we both have kayaks and my husband has a one person canoe. We cant bring them with us because of space issues but we do rent at different places. We rented Kayaks at Long Key and Anastasia one time and really enjoyed it.

In that case you'll probably enjoy renting either a canoe or kayak right there at the state park and paddling the Black Water River.
You can also rent them at the Everglades National Park in Everglades City or at the Ivy House.

Lots of good paddling trips there.
Check out our google web site for some:

We love Long Key. We have stayed there in the past and will be there again next month. Nothing can beat a site right on the ocean. As much as we love Bahia Honda and John PennyCamp and Curry Hammock,,, Long Key would always be my first choice.Actually we love all the Florida state parks we have stayed at. I think they are just the best places to stay.We have also stayed at Anastasia, Talbot Island, Fort Clinch, Gamble Rogers, Jonathan Dickerson Stephan Foster and St Joes. Next month we will visit Oscar Scherer and Collier Seminole for the first time.

If you are a paddler, (canoe or kayaks), Collier Seminole is a great place as a home base for paddling around Marco Island, the creeks and rivers in the Everglades NP or Big Cypress Preserve.
If not you might not like it

Thanks for the heads up, that means the other parks will have even more pressure put on them....

That is exactly why I posted it.
Long Key was always every ones second choice after Bahia Honda when it came to the state parks on the Keys.

I for one loved sitting on the beach 20 feet from the back of our travel trailer reading a book while looking over the wide expanse of the Atlantic.

For the past fifteen years, we have scored two or three two week stays there every winter, but I am sure with a sea wall, it will never have the natural charm that it had before.

  • My thoughts exactly floridacamper. It's been about 5 years since I stayed at Long Key but I remember it being nothing extraordinary. We are going to Boyd's in June so that will take care of our Keys itch for a few years.
