Looking for things to do around Rochester MN

We are at Mayo Clinic for some tests and have quite a few down days with nothing going on. Just wondering what is interesting to do in this area? Thinking about going to the Miss River but don't know what area to go to.
We don't care much about the big city or Mall of Amer.
If anyone has suggestions let me know.

Thanks

JimJ
  • The National Eagle Center in Wabasha is a must if you are in the area! The town is also an interesting place to visit and do a bit of browsing and/or shopping. There was a very nice campground at a small Motel on the south side of town. It would be a great place to spend a few days as you wait/recover. Wish you luck, and good health!
Check out the SPAM museum, and the resturant across the street for a SpamBurger. Go a bit further west to Blue Earth and see the Jolly Green Giant!

Actually the National Eagle Center is in Wabasha which is 30 miles north west of Red wing - it is a great place and lots and lots of bald eagles

From Rochester both city's are only 46-47 miles away

42 Miles away from Rochester is the Spam Museum in Austin - it is quite good and worth the trip - really well done and good exhibits

    Thank you for the correction!
  • Looking at Streets & Trips, Wabasha is 30 miles southeast of Redwing.

    Paul....
  • The campgrounds have a Rochester are yearly booklet showing all attractions in SE Minnesota. Also many flyers for attractions. All are free. Stop by the office where you checked in.
  • South of Rochester is a large Amish area. There are tours that visit a farm or two. Also the towns there are very nice to see. If you hit it right, you may find a barn raising.
Winona can be an interesting place. As fall is coming the leaves will be turning and the area has a diversity of tree types.

  • Red wing Minnesota is not too far from Rochester. It is on the Mississippi River. It is a great place to watch bald eagles. In fact, there is an eagle interpretive center there. The Great River Road runs along the river, and is a beautiful drive in the fall.

There are usually events going on iin the courtyard outside the Mayo buildings. On Thirsdays in the summer there is a food and craft bazaar. There is a stage there, and there are often performers. Be sure to check out the artwork in the main halls of the buildings. There is also a small Mayo historical museum. There are many stores and restaurants in easy walking distance. And everyplace is wheelchair accessible.
