Mammoth Cave NP

We were there last summer. I can't remember what tour we did but it was one of the shorter ones because we were toting a baby along. If money is a concern read the descriptions of each tour carefully because some of the longer tours overlap what you would see on the shorter ones.

We also did the Historic tour. It was great, a little bit of everything! I did see another tour that I believe had some crawling to it. I'm a bit claustrophobic so I don't know if I could've done that one. But it was supposed to be really cool. From what I have read each one has its highlights. Hopefully someone will post that has done each one and can offer an opinion on each.

We did Domes and Drip Stones which is "moderate" (if I remember correctly) and it was not difficult. We also did the self tour. That was easy. Make your tour reservations early. We were there in late September or early October and many tours were sold out days in advance.

We've been to Mammoth Cave NP several times. I’ve always enjoyed doing the Historic Tour in the morning, get lunch, then take the Domes and Drip Stones tour in the afternoon. I use the NP website to reserve the tours before arriving so I can pick the times. The Historic Tour, as its name suggests, gives you a lot of background on the cave and its history. The entrance to the Domes and Drip Stones is really dramatic. The Domes and Drip Stones tour involves a short bus ride from the Visitor Center to a different section of the cave. They have surveyed more than 405 miles of cave passage so its interesting to visit another section.

I'm sorry I don't remember the name of the tour we did, but it was pretty basic maybe 1.5 hours. My wife and daughter were too nervous to do any of the more adventurous tours, but I think they regretted the decision after we were done. However, we all agree it was absolutely amazing!

Do one at Mammoth and then one at Diamond Caverns to see something special.

Whatever you decide to do at Mammoth, make sure to take in some of the tours of privately owned caves in the area. Mammoth is much different than most caves.

We did a lantern tour several years ago which was very interesting. There are many choices and they take you into different sections of the cave.

For the most fun do a wild cave tour. You will see and experience things that most people never will, not for those who are claustrophobic though. We did many of these years ago, health reasons prevent me now, but it was a blast and would be still spelunking if my knees worked properly.

I thought the Historic Tour looked interesting - will add 1 vote for that!
