Mayport NAS

Hopefully, in June we will be going to Mayport NAS for a couple of weeks. Wanting to know if there is anything special in the area not to miss. Trying to plan a day trip or two and am looking for suggestions. Thanks in advance for any info.

Yessir, we will be at Pelican Roost. Have been there once and are looking forward to going back. Very enjoyable. Thanks for all replies.
  • Pelican Roost and Osprey Cove are both Military Campgrounds - available to active duty and retired military.
  • X2 on Seafood Kitchen - food is better than Singleton's. Although if it's your first visit to the area, go to Singleton's for at least one meal. Daytime. You can see the river traffic, watch fishing boats, barges & the ferry. To find Singleton's take A1A out to the ferry. Singleton's is just before the ferry.

Mayport has 2 great parks. Pelican Roost right where the Navy ships go out in to the river to the open ocean. If you have a scanner you can listen to the basin info. The other is Osprey Cove located in the back of the base behind enlisted housing. Beautiful setting just not on the water. It is sure not as windy as being on the water.

If the New York is in port, get the # for their qtrdeck & call to check about a tour. We did that on our recent stay at Mayport. The hull has some steel from the Towers in it.

Day trip. Definitely St Augustine. Oh! Check at ITT for discount tkts for local attractions. We got discount tkts for the tram that goes around St A. You can get off & on as you want plus the drivers - most of them - are quite interesting with lots of knowledge. Plus parts of Old Town aren't easy to navigate or find parking.

    Enjoy your visit!
  • Thanks for all the suggestions so far. We have done Savannah several times so no need to go there. I Singletons actually on base or close by? Any more suggestions would be appreciated.
  • Seafood Kitchen at the corner of Atlantic Blvd. and Royal Palm. It's on the back side of the building so you have to turn left on Royal Palm. I think the food is better than Singleton's and that's saying something!
  • Watch the submarines, destroyers, and carriers go back and forth by the campsites.
  • Kingsley Plantation built 1814. JAX Beach. Drive S on a1A to St. Augustine. I would recommend continuing to Flagler Beach.

Downtown is fun if you like downtowns. The Landings has shops, restaurants (Hooters-yippee!) and you can take water taxis up and down the St. John's which runs right thru Jax. We love Jax and go at least once a year.
  • Fernandina Beach...old town just north a ways. Nice drive up, red brick fort at Fort Clinch SP there. Via the ferry, cool ride.

Singleton's at Mayport...Diners, Drive Inna and Dives place...emphasis on dives, great food. Safe Harbor seafood...pick yours out of the case for cooking or order off the menu.

Savannah is probably doable as a long day trip...enough to make you go back for sure. If you mountain bike...super trails at Kathryn Hanna city park/campground close by. Beaches there as well.

    Good stuff...enjoy the area. :) :)
