Michigan - best time to avoid biting flies

I hope we can make the trip this fall. We will have to travel before the campgrounds close. I really haven't paid attention to those dates. I doubt that we would make reservations. Do you think that would be a problem during fall color weeks? We have a generator so we could do without electric hookup.

LOL travelnutz! You should have seen the lightning that accompanied the front last night. I felt sorry for those in a tent camper.?? I love those "Hoodie" nights around the campfire. We will be headed thru the UP again on the 14th of Sept. we hope to stay in St. Ignace the first night. Any campground suggestions?

That was a few nights ago after a cold front went thru and should be about 90 F today and the mid 60's to nearly 70 at night for a low! Will be back to the norm of 80 daytime high and 60 at night for a low this week and as far as they give the forcast into next week.

I'm in the UP right now at Sault Ste Marie. 2 nights ago I wore my hoodie at the campfire. It will definitely be chilly then. Have a blast. The UP is a beautiful place to visit.

That's when you're 'likely' to have them...but it's not a given. Just carry your good luck piece!

We have also found that they're greater in numbers in the Upper Peninsula rather than northern Michigan (below the Mackinac Bridge).

If you're around the lakeshore it's much better because of the breeze. Stay away for marshy areas and you'll be fine.

Folks warned us about them in Alaska, too, but we had absolutely no problem... it just all depends on many factors. Surely, it shouldn't keep you away. Good luck!

I haven't been on the cruise during that time period but I would imagine that it is beautiful during the fall color change. I would guess that at mid to late September. Others could chime in on this timing. I see where they are open for business during that timeframe. I would guess that they time their closing to the end of the color season.

No worry of flies during that timeframe:) stay at Munising Tourist Park CG on Lake Superior. Bring a Hoodie!

Anybody do the pictured rocks boat tour in Sept/Early Oct?

The late spring and early summer is the worst, but anytime it's warm you can run into those nasty, biting flies. Best time we found was mid September to mid October. It's cooler, there are very few flies or mosquitoes, and less people as well. Nice and peaceful.

Pulled into to Mackinaw City late last night - 9:00 pm - no bugs bites.
