Milwaukee and Chicago

We are thinking of taking a trip from Rhode Island to Chicago and Milwaukee this summer. We will be going through Pennsylvania...stopping at Knoebels for a couple of days. Does anyone have suggestions for camping, or must see sights, around Chicago and Milwaukee...or anywhere else along the way? We have a 30' Class C and The kids (they will be 18,12 and 8).
  • We really enjoyed the City Museum in Milwaukee. It has nice variety in it's exhibits -- something for everyone.

In Chicago, the Field Museum of Natural History and the Shedd Aquarium are very family friendly. I'd also recommend going to the Skydeck of the Willis Tower, tallest building in the western hemisphere. It's gorgeous around sunset, and you can watch the city light up for nighttime. If the weather is nice, bring a soccer ball or a Frisbee and hang out in one of the parks along the waterfront.
  • Dave,

Will you be dragging a towed??
If Yes, just plan on expensive and/or difficult parking in Chicago.
If No, you should get new maps of area Chicago transit. You might be able to overnight near a stop. (I left the area 10 years ago.)

It is a great town, but it is expensive.

  • The Kane County Forest Preserve has nice new campground in Big Rock

Fifteen miles north to Elburn and you can catch regular Metra commuter trains right into Chicago.
  • For first time visitors, all of the good stuff in Chicago is downtown on the lake front.....where you will be hard pressed to find parking for the RV.

I suggest that you find a parking place north or far west and take the CTA downtown. The Museum of Science and Industry it at the top of the list.
  • Do a Google search for `_______ tourism' and put Chicago or Milwaukee in the blank space. One could spend weeks in Chicago and not see everything.
