Depends on where from and to, but generally as far west as possible, either IIRC I-39 or the Tri-State(if it's called that anymore).

I-39 good choice...gets you into WI without the clutter. If it's early enough the 294 even with tolls is a good choice.

We did it yesterday east to west I-80 never do I-90 it goes down town. get west of the city before turning north. Friday morning 9:00 bumper to bumper traveling 70MPH.

There is no easy way to go thru or around Chicago have done it 3 times pulling a 5ver was awefull didn't matter going east or west. Traffic plus roads are horrendous actually bent axel. Friend who traveled with us said next time she's taking I70.

I-39 works IF your final destination is middle or western Wisconsin. Otherwise I'd suggest I-294 (around the city) which has frequent tolls but saves a bunch of miles of the final destination is Milwaukee or Door County.

My earlier post:
The Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94) through Chicago will have lanes closed three weekends in June:

6/13-15 - for 55 hours all Eastbound lanes closed at Ohio/Ontario feeder. Eastbound traffic will use two temporary, 15 MPH lanes.

6/20-22 - for 55 hours all Westbound lanes closed at Ohio/Ontario feeder, detour will be on surface streets including a turn around!

6/27-29 - for 55 hours Eastbound Ohio exit (that handles all downtown traffic will be closed.

IDOT is predicting massive traffic jams on ALL area expressways. Detour routes are I-294 (toll road and heavy traffic any day); farther west on I-80 to I-355, also a toll road and pricy - $29.60 for a PU with a 2 axle fiver or a 2 axle MH with toad, higher for a three axle.

Personally I would recommend I-80 West to I-39 going from Indiana to Wisconsin or the reverse.

Been doing it for 9 years to see the kids and grandchildren. What a drag. BUT no longer. they moved to Cincinnati. We've tried every road over the years and recently came up with a way to avoid the I90 widening (we have been avoiding downtown for years). From the east, we take 80/94 to 294 then head west on 88 (Aurora) to 39 then north. It adds about 15-20 minutes under optimum conditions on the other roads but with 90 under construction, it actually takes us less time and we drive at the speed limit without any aggravation. From the west take 39 north. We have an iPass transponder and love the open road tolling as we don't have to stop for anything but pit stops.
