In all our years of camping, we never make reservations. Was usually fairly easy to find a CG for a few days whenever we dropped in to someplace interesting even some of the major national parks.
It's becoming more difficult to do that now - matter of fact, we were in Everglades last year - tried to get one of the sites in the power loop. ALL were reserved. However, we stayed in a non-HU site for three days, and all three days there were at least six or seven power site empty the entire three days. BUT, rangers could not allow us to use it, because it was "reserved" but not used ... several sites remained empty the entire time we stayed, and were still empty the day we left.
ALL public park systems should accommodate both reservations and walk-ins.
