monkey is right on. We seldom make reservations either. The issue as I see it is two fold: 1; being the economy, a "typical" family of four on vacation – motel, $100 plus a night vs campground at $25. And the kids have something to do during the day and can run around. Hmmm?
Secondly; baby boomers, and I is one. More and more of us are on the road. More of us than there are campgrounds.
We once pulled into a SP and asked for a particular site for the night or two. We were told that the site was reservation only. We asked if it was reserved and were told that it wasn't. Great! We'll take it. Sorry, we were told. It's only available via reservation. OK, we'll reserve it. Reply: Sorry you can't! We need two weeks notice.
We left.
