Montreal ! Bonus points for Ausable Chasm !

I tried a Montreal search, and did not find much (found a little). What do people know about Montreal campgrounds, or camper friendly areas in town? I'm looking especially for nice bath facilities or other amenities for the dubious family traveling with me. Need to get into town each day with subway or driving.

Also, Anyone stay at the Ausable Chasm campground? I have not searched that one yet.

thanks!
  • Thanks lizzie, that is a good lead, and I will check it out.

Thanks PackerBacker, I will try to arrange some more time for the Chasm area. Still have not figured out the timing because family wants to spend lots of time in Montreal, but I'll figure a way. We're doing less mileage this trip than I usually push for, so I think I can get that accomplished.

We've have a seasonal campsite at Ausable Chasm for many years now. There's lots to do with the kids. There's bike trails, disc golf, a pool then all the Chasm attraction stuff to do.

We use our own rv facilities (shower/washroom etc) but the washrooms & showers up at the office are kept clean (several times a day). I don't know what your definition is of nice bath facilities? Showers are individual door stalls, each accessed from the main building deck; remember, it's a campground in the Adirondacks.

If your plan is to use Ausable Chasm as.a base to visit Montreal, it is 75 miles (160 km's) one way with the border in between. The border can be anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours. Your best bet is to stay at Camping Alouette as mentioned to visit Montreal then spend a couple nights at Ausable Chasm.

Only a half a day for activities will leave you with just doing a simple chasm tour and the raft ride to end it. You really will not have much time for anything else.
  • While visiting AuSable, we stayed at Cumberland Bay State Park in nearby Plattsburg, NY. It has one loop that was electric. Campsites are sort of lined up in a field facing the Lake, not very level, but very pretty. There are trees and it is natural looking. We were there in June of 2014. lizzie
  • On the Ausable Chasm campground (or any nearby) my question relates to how nice, peaceful, activity filled, etc. it is. The Chasm seems very interesting. We will just have a half day available for activities, but it will be a weekday most likely, so we would like maximize our planning. I need to look at their hours again online. We are looking for campgrounds that are just a little more natural (i.e. leaning more towards tress or woods more than just a grassed line-'em-up RV parking lot). But we understand the conveniently located RV grassed lots type of parks can be helpful when located well. And or the family, any info on bathroom/shower ratings would help. I'm still doing research with my references, but I'm interested in any insight.
