Motorcycling & Truck Camping around Wytheville VA

Hello all, we are planning a trip from Ontario Canada to Nashville TN to join some maxi-scooter enthusiasts in September. On the way down, we want to ride the "claw of the dragon" near Wytheville VA and find a RV campground nearby for our truck camper and cargo trailer.

We'd like it to be quiet, clean and safe (we ride most of the day and are not at the campsite), and somewhere near nature (no urban RV parks). Given this description, do any of you have recommendations for us? Thanks in advance, Len

  • Just to close the loop, we did stay at Hungry Mother State Park. There are 2 areas to RV camp in. Creekside Campground which only offers electric and water hookups and Camp Burson which offers electric, water and (I believe) sewer hookups and is more like a typical RV campground (because it was before HMSP took it over). There is a dump station near the Park Office which we took advantage of.

We stayed in the Creekside Campground for 10 days and loved it. Very scenic, quiet, not overly private but spacing between our site (#3) and the one beside was sufficiently far away so that we didn't feel cramped or imposed upon. It was very clean both outside on the grounds and within all facilities including the bathhouse and restrooms. Ice, soda and wood all available for a reasonable cost.

Highlight was our hard working and attentive Campground Host - Millard. He just couldn't do enough to ensure we had a great stay. This fella is a true gem-tleman.

HMSP is very close to Marion VA and the "Back of the Dragon" cuts right through the park at its entrance. Seeing how we were there to ride the "Back" and TN's "Snake" and surrounding roads, the location was perfect.

Thanks for those who responded with HMSP as their suggestion. I too "Highly Recommend" this facility. All parks should be this nice and managed this well.
  • "Back of the Dragon" runs right through Hungry Mother State Park near Marion. They have several campgrounds from tent to FHU.
  • KOA, Fancy Gap, VA its a little ways south from Wytheville but not far and right next to the Blue Ridge parkway. The parkway boarders the campground property. Nice area to see and close to your requested travels.
I have never had a bad experience camping here. ITS right off I-77 too. just south of Wytheville.
