wife and i used to own a 1 bedroom condo mainland side of intercoastal waterway at sunset beach nc. 5 minutes from calabash. we loved it. nice and quiet but close enough to everything.

X3 on this. Unless you plan on having a small business like a gift shop, bike rental or who knows what in your retirement I would go outside the Myrtle Beach area a few miles. As stated, South Port is quite nice and you can catch the ferry from there to the Carolina Beach area too. We found a nice little campground 20 miles outside of Myrtle and love it because it is out of the CRAZY stuff in town.

Look into the tax environment for each state, NC and SC

To the Op. you also may want to look up some in NC. At South Port, Holden,or Ocean Isle. Much quieter places to be.

Can golf anywhere. Honestly. The only reason Myrtle even exists, is because of the beach.

Huntington Beach State Park is the place if you like state parks. They have some FHU the rest water and electric. 4 years ago we paid $18 a night for W&E. We have also stayed at Willowtree which is near Long's which is about 10 miles from North Myrtle Beach. Very nice FHU campground but very expensive too.

For home searching, I'd search south just of Myrtle Beach. South in the area of Surfside, Garden City, or Possibly Murells Inlet.

If I was buying I'd take a hard look at Georgetown a bit south. It's a lovely quiet town but close enough to mayhem for the occasional visit.

Both of the state parks here are very nice and well maintained. My husband is partial to Huntington Beach and I prefer Myrtle Beach SP. There are some private campgrounds with all the bells and whistles. In Surfside beach, between Myrtle Beach and Murrells Inlet is Ocean Lakes. It is the southern most ocean front resort in a stretch of campgrounds south of Myrtle Beach State Park. At the north end, close to North Myrtle Beach is Myrtle Beach Travel Park. In the heart of Myrtle Beach is a KOA camp ground. It is not ocean front, but easy access.

We retired to Murrells Inlet 20 years ago, we live less than 1/2 mile as the crow flies to the ocean front. It is a terrific area for an easy laid back life style. Yes, Myrtle Beach is a congested nightmare during the summer. that is why most of us stay away from certain areas. Just as locals who live near a big city know when to avoid going into town.

Horry County is one of the largest counties east of the Mississippi River. We offer an amazing variety of lifestyles. Live near the ocean, on a golf course, or on the intercoastal waterway boating enthusiasts. My work is fascinating just from the variety of homes and communities in my county and in Georgetown county just to the south. I'll take our traffic any day over the traffic in Charleston.

For our friends on the boards insulting my chosen home, most folks who say they are moving to MB actually mean the area around. Just as anyone moving to Cleveland is not actually moving to the city of Cleveland.
