As an ex-smoker and now can not stand the smell of cigarette smoke I would have asked him to put it out if he was representing the park. the poster was right about the man who sound like the type that thinks the ground is his ashtray. Yes I do like a campfire but not the smoke going into my rig.
Your entry to a park and the first person you meet is a very deciding point of how the park is run. We have stopped at a campground one afternoon that had a sign out to place your money in an envelope don't ask for a discount because we're already giving one and pick a site that did not have a meter on the box which were far and few. We took a quick look around and left. Next park up the road had a nice entry with a helpful person in the office and we stayed.
